Charlie Hunter x Ella Feingold

Fri Jul 31, 2026 8:00 PM - 10:30 PM Barrington Hall, 01230

Different Strokes for Different Folks marks a full-circle moment for Ella Feingold, who first saw Charlie Hunter performing with Leon Parker at the Regatta Bar in the late '90s. She never imagined that decades later, she’d be playing and recording alongside him as both a peer and a friend. Today, Hunter describes her as “one of the baddest, greasiest guitar players on the planet.”

This exploratory duo project is a deep dive into the art of musical conversation. Built on a foundation of rhythm, space, and groove, Hunter and Feingold engage in a fluid, improvisational exchange, pushing beyond conventional structures to create something raw, immediate, and deeply immersive. Their interplay unfolds like a dialogue—organic, unpredictable, and rich with nuance—where silence holds as much weight as sound.

At its core, Different Strokes for Different Folks is an exploration of time and texture, where funk meets minimalism and melody meets motion. Rooted in jazz, soul, and ambient influences, the project embraces both synchronicity and divergence, allowing each moment to breathe and evolve naturally. It’s a testament to the power of the guitar as a vessel for personal expression—where innovation, authenticity, and human connection take center stage.

It’s music that’s complex but never complicated.
It’s music for rolling the windows down and cruising.
It’s music that makes your neck sore.
It’s music to get lost in and let your mind wander.
It’s music to sing over.
It’s music that makes you want to pick up your instrument and play along.
It’s music that takes its time.
It’s a musical conversation between two friends, captured over four days.
It’s minimalist funk.

Artist Bios

Charlie Hunter is a guitarist, producer, and composer known for his innovative approach to the instrument. Renowned for his ability to simultaneously play bass lines, melodies, and chords, he first gained recognition for his custom eight-string guitar. He now performs on 6- and 7-string guitars built by Hybrid Guitars Co., which he co-founded in 2015.

Hunter’s genre-blending style fuses jazz, funk, blues, and rock, earning him a reputation as one of the most distinctive guitarists of his generation. Over his 35-year career, he has released numerous albums and collaborated with a diverse range of artists, from jazz legends to contemporary innovators.

A driving force in modern jazz and groove, Charlie’s work with SuperBlue, alongside Kurt Elling, has received critical acclaim. He continues to tour extensively, appearing at major international festivals and venues, while also producing and mentoring emerging talent through SideHustle Records.

On Different Strokes For Different Folks, Charlie plays his own Hybrid Big 6 guitar tuned FBbEb BbEbAb, a Two Rock Signature 35 amp for guitar and an ACME audio Motown direct box for the bass side. Charlie lends drums and percussion on select tracks.

Ella Feingold is a Grammy winning guitarist, composer, and orchestrator renowned for her deep pocket, harmonic sophistication, and technical innovation. She studied under the legendary Spanky Alford, mastering gospel-infused soul-jazz phrasing before embarking on a career performing/ recording with Queen Latifah, Erykah Badu, Bruno Mars/Silk Sonic,The Roots, and Jay-Z.

Celebrated by peers like Questlove, Lenny Kravitz & Johnny Marr, Charlie Hunter as “one of the baddest, greasiest guitar players on the planet,” Ella’s playing is defined by her command of rhythm guitar, combining syncopation, complex voicings, and a deep groove informed by funk, gospel, and jazz traditions. She is a pioneer of inverted tuning, inspired by Chris Weisman, which allows for fresh harmonic structures and voicings inaccessible in standard tuning. This unique approach shapes her signature sound—blending lush chord inversions, walking basslines, and expressive melodic phrasing.

Now based in the mountains of Western Massachusetts, Ella continues to perform, teach, orchestrate, and refine her artistry. She is currently collaborating with Charlie Hunter, Erykah Badu, Meshell Ndegeocello and Bootsy Collins and developing a potential Fender signature model optimized for inverted tuning.

On Different Strokes For Different Folks, Ella plays a Mexican Fender Strat strung “inverted tuning”, ukulele felt pick, 1967 Fender Princeton Reverb and an Ensoniq ASR-10 VCF Filter.
